Jason J. Henderson (b. 1976, US) is an emerging, artist who works primarily in acrylic paint. Paper bag sketches – this is where it all began. Growing up in a low-income household, his mother would cut their leftover grocery bags into squares for him to draw on. Henderson would then go on to become a known child prodigy in Kentucky and was the first from his county to attend the state’s prestigious Governor’s School for the Arts as a teen, where he studied under Martin Rollins and Reuben J. Moreno. Today, the artist approaches a blank canvas with meditative mindfulness to create a spiritual flow in his pieces. It is what Henderson calls a ‘divine dance.’ He mixes dance gesture, drawing, painting, airbrush, typography, and graphic design principles to express an interplay of multiple layers and textures to create abstract and/or representational pieces. These uniquely crafted experiences reveal new possibilities from realms of beauty previously unseen. Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Georgia O’Keeffe, Paul Rand, Arshile Gorky, and Walter Gropius are a few of his greatest influences. After high school, Henderson joined the Army to finance his undergraduate degree and found himself in the southwest desert of El Paso, Texas, where he received his B.A. in Art: Graphic Design from the University of Texas at El Paso. He went on to work as a graphic designer for several years before putting his artistic career on hold to raise a family and focus on his pastoral work. Ready to return to his true calling in 2020, Henderson enrolled in painting courses at his local community college for an artistic rebirth. He currently resides in the desert southwest of El Paso, Texas where he is currently working on a new body of work based on his journey through religious deconstruction, spiritual resurrection, and mystical encounters. His awards include Best of Show, EPCC 46th Annual Student Art Exhibition; Third Place, Artovation Student Show 2023 Exhibition, Texas Association of Schools of Art; Best of Show and Gold - Logo, El Paso Addy Awards; Certificate of Merit: Academic Achievement, Department of Art, University of Texas at El Paso, and is a Collegiate All-American Scholar. Henderson also served as Creative Director, Digital Designer, Instructor, Commercial Artist, and Interactive Content Writer.
